Here's a look at your national and international headlines. At least 18 people are dead. Dozens more injured after powerful storms hit parts of the U.S. over the weekend. Astrid martinez reports on the destruction. >> A funnel cloud twisted over north texas, part of a strong storm system that tore apart homes, businesses and vehicles. >> Frank soltysiak hid in a cooler with some of his neighbours at a mobile home park in sanger, north of dallas. >> I grabbed my dog. We had it for there, and it just the it was just unbelievable. The sound of all the destruction going on around us. >> Everyone survived, as did dozens of others who packed into a bathroom at a truck stop in valley view that's now torn apart. >> The mangled metal, an example of the storm's power. >> I kid you not, 30s in someone goes, get to the bathroom. >> Now at least seven people, including two children, were killed and dozens hurt in cooke county, texas. >> They need your prayers. They need your support. And god willing, we will help them rebuild their lives. There were also storm related deaths in oklahoma, where this funnel cloud was spotted near the town of mutual roofs were torn off, homes and vehicles flipped over. >> In claremore. >> We certainly had a violent weather event. >> More deaths were reported in arkansas. >> The house just started to shake violently and I was like, nope, let's go to the laundry room. >> Throughout the affected states, hundreds of thousands lost power. >> And as the system moves east on a busy holiday weekend, around 50 million people from georgia to new jersey are under the threat of more severe weather. Astrid martinez, cbs news. >> Strong winds and heavy rain pounded the coastal regions of bangladesh and india as a severe cyclone made landfall. Millions of people are without electricity after a power poles fell and trees were uprooted by gusty winds. Dozens of bangladeshi villages were flooded after flood protection embankments either washed away or were damaged by the storm surge. Nearly 800,000 people had been evacuated from vulnerable areas in bangladesh on sunday, the india meteorological department says the storm is likely to weaken further
throughout the day, but warns heavy showers will remain over the next two days. The government of papua new guinea says friday's landslide buried more than 2000 people alive, and it has formally asked for international help. The government figure is three times more than the united nations estimate of 670. The remains of only six people had been recovered so far from the buried village in enga province. Australia is preparing to send aircraft and other equipment to help its south pacific neighbour israelis scrambled for cover over the weekend as air raid sirens sounded in tel aviv for the first time in months. Hamas has been attacking israel from rafah. >> One person in israel was injured seeking shelter from the attack, and damage otherwise was minor. This house in central israel was damaged by a shrapnel hit. Still it was a demonstration that even after seven months of fighting, hamas still has significant weapons. Meanwhile, israel allowed around 200 aid trucks through the kerem shalom crossing at gaza's southeastern corner, bypassing the main rafah crossing that has been closed for weeks. Thank you. >> And on the diplomatic front, norway's foreign minister sunday presented palestinian prime minister mohammad mustafa with papers confirming norway's recognition of the state of palestine. >> We very much look forward to upgrading our diplomatic and consular relations with the state of palestine. >> Mustafa used the opportunity to repeat calls for an end to the war. >> I think it's time to go beyond condemning actions and requesting israel to stop the war in gaza. I think we need to raise the voices a little bit more and demand a cease fire. >> But the rocket attack makes a cease fire much less likely. One hard line minister in netanyahu's cabinet urged the army to hit rafah, even harder. Residents have been away from fort nelson since may 10th. The mayor says services in the community have been restored.
